Listing of newspaper articles relating to Woodend pits

The above data has been taken from the Durham mining museum website.

Hematite was the principal ore mined from the Bigrigg pits., here's some examples of the ore removed from Bigrigg mines/pits.

'Onion skin' ore    Barite cavity ore    'Kidney ore'

Every so often one of the shafts caves in and has to be capped, the pictures  in the attached albums, of  William Pit in 1990 attest to this. The underground pictures of Gutterby are photographs when the mine was recently explored.

There have been numerous accidents, deaths in the local mines, a more recent one was reported in the local press (see report below), most of the early deaths can be researched on the excellent Durham Mining Museum website under 'Bigrigg mines'. The site contains a large amount of information relating to who owned the mines, output from them, numbers of workers and has the names of those killed in the various incidents in the mines (with links to newspaper articles,  etc.).

 DAVID LAWN. DRIFT.
Opened in approximately 1941 and was named after the Company Chairman, who lived in Pallaflatt House. The Mine was not a success, it is understood that it suddenly collapsed, there were other workings in the area That left Croft Pit as a pumping station for Wyndham which closed in 1946.

SIR JOHN WALSH MINE.
Closed on June 30th 1939, when it stopped pumping the water from all the mines in the Bigrigg area, the water was drained into what is now Longlands Lake. It was served by a branch off the main mineral line, which crossed the Pallaflatt Park house branch, by way of a diamond crossing. The same line served Postelthwaites mines at Moor Row, the Woodend Mines were abandoned at the same time.
